Holy Eucharist is a Sacrament of Faith

One primary thing that stands out in the life of the Church is the fact that the Holy Eucharist, the Sacrament of the real presence of Jesus, under the appearances of bread and wine, forms the foundation of her spirituality. If the Holy Eucharist is taken off the Church, she becomes like any other gathering. So, it is not surprising if she devotes length of weeks to teaching about it. This is not her making, it is evident from the way the Lord himself handled this greatest treasure.
The discourse on it is the longest treatise in the Bible (see Jn 6).
We have read from it for two weeks, but it must be the case that the Church wants us to know more about it. Essentially, the Church wants us to understand the Holy Eucharist as a spiritual food. The Jews who were operating on the physical level, mistook the words of Jesus about the Holy Eucharist. Hence, they complained and murmured that "he wanted to turn them to cannibals". The Holy Eucharist is the food that gives strength to our souls, and thus draws us closer to God. More than the baked cake that the prophet Elijah ate, which fortified him to journey to the mountain Horeb, the Holy Eucharist helps us on our journey to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of God.
With a proper disposition and a worthy reception of the Holy Eucharist, we are able to do away with some of the vices St Paul mentions in Eph 4:30-5:2.
May the Lord lead us to a better understanding and appreciation of the Holy Eucharist.
God loves you! God bless you!
